Abstract

This paper engages the context of the agricultural export diversification that occurred in Rio de Janeiro during the second half of the 18th century. The purpose of this article is to rescue the technical and scientific processes that were associated with the production of indigo and cochineal dye. A set of sources –letters, memories and instructions– demonstrate that for decades there was a commitment to establish a correct method of production of dyes, which indicates a knowledge elaborated in colonial soil with little metropolitan influence. In this sense, this paper contributes to current research that intends to review scientific activities of colonial men.
