Abstract

During the last years of the 20th century, one could observe a great optimism within film critics and academics about the exhibition opportunities that the new digital technologies were supposed to bring to the independent auteur cinema. As time has passed, such an euphoric point of view has to be qualified, insofar as at the present time the institutional funding that supports it are still driven by the criterion of the projects’ potential for commercial exploitation and festival exhibition. This is shown through the criterion used by Fonds Sud Cinéma, which supported director Paula Markovitch with her first feature that won international recognition. The adventure of her second film, which does not stick to the parameters of the mainstream contemporary auteur cinema is very different, insofar as the film had major difficulties to get financed and did not receive the same festival support, which certainly contributes to the distributors’ reluctance to release it. The traditional legitimization circuits still opérate, and the digital space has not yet turned into a sustainable source of income for independent cinema
