Abstract

The "Pinochet case" appeared as a surprise to the Chilean public, and the reaction of the political actors revealed, in the two main sectors of the political spectrum, a significant degree of ignorance of world politics and the motivations for the actions of international actors. This paper explores the possibility of explaining this situation, of understanding the symbolic importance of Chile before the world; to show the historical reasons in the Spanish-Chilean relations from 1936 to the nineties and help understand the development of this "case" today; and to show the opportunities and dangers that this fact has especially for the weak countries in the contemporary international system.
