Abstract

The 1980s saw the discipline of international relations improve on the basis of the publication of important scientific works, some of them of outstanding international influence. Among the issues that stand out we find: problems of the international society, conceptual and doctrinal approaches, Latin America, the United States, the Pacific Basin, neighborhood relations, Chilean foreign policy, diplomacy, economics, anthropology, journalism and International Law (private international law, Antarctic issues, law of the sea, border issues). The balance that this decade contributes is positive, in part because works of high scientific quality are already being observed and, above all, because they demonstrate an ability to influence regional and universal thought on the main subjects it dealt with.

Francisco Orrego Vicuña

Distinguido internacionalista chileno, ex Director del Instituto de Estudios Internacionales de la Universidad de Chile y ex embajador de ese país en Londres.  Presidente del Consejo Chileno para las Relaciones Internacionales.  Autor de numerosas obras sobre asuntos internacionales, en particular sobre aspectos relacionados con el derecho del mar, el Sistema Interamericano, y otros.
