Abstract

The current global recession has exacerbated, and perhaps further evidenced, the problems inherent in the Bretton Woods system. In this paper we argue that, despite the theoretical soundness of its economic foundation, the postwar International Trading System has not been solid enough to withstand the setbacks due to extra-economic considerations, which today seem to have more prominence than never. A set of protectionist or potentially protectionist measures have cracked the very foundations of the system. This is certainly neither open nor liberal, but more and more regulated, we would say almost manipulated, in an ad-hoc way and at the service of a few.
