Abstract

The incidence of ectopic pregnancy has increased in the last 20 years and has become an important health problem, being the principal cause of maternal mortality during the first trimester, responsible for 10 to 15% of total maternal deaths. The recurren- ce is frequent, 1 out of 3, and has grave consequences in subsequent fertility. The social economic repercussions on both the individual as well as society are considerable. One of the factors that augment the risk of EP is the infection of the upper genital tract due to STD. The infectious agents that cause STD generally increase the risk of EP, especially the incidence of Chlamydia trachomatis due to the high rate of infection and secondary damage to permeability of tubes.
