The Pacific Rim will be the center of the world's political and economic interests. Hence, the Latin American riparian countries must maintain a commercial exchange with the area and an active participation in cooperation organizations. Regarding Chile's relations with the region, a description is made of how this country has become aware of its location. Active Chilean participation has been possible through a series of initiatives such as government support and an economic policy of opening up to the outside world. With the arrival of democracy, the country will face a new type of bond. We maintain that a consistent institutional framework is necessary and that for countries to achieve their insertion, actions must be carried out at the national, Latin American and trans-Pacific levels.
