Conflicts about autonomy and partie militancy in the feminist press of Brazil and Chile (1981-1984)

Abstract

During the 1980s, discussions about the autonomy of the movement in front of groups and political parties were central to the constitution of Latin American feminism. Thus, in this article we discuss how this debate was, between the years 1981 and 1984, in the feminist press of Brazil and Chile. For that, we will analyze two Brazilian journals, Mulherio (1981-1988) and Chanacomchana (1981-1987), and the Chilean magazine Furia (1981-1984). Although the two countries lived in different political conjunctures, discussions about the autonomy of the feminist movement crossed national boundaries and formed the identity of feminism in Latin America. Thus, we demonstrate the political and cultural specificities present in both countries that gave different contours to the discussion about autonomy.
