This study inquired about discourses of masculinity from everyday experiences of students representative, since there is a persistence of the challenges in the University of Cuenca for the deconstruction of a hegemonic masculinity, given that 1 in 2 students has suffered sexual harassment (Universidad de Cuenca, 2022), and 83% of male students are indifferent to traditional masculinity (Orellana and Yanza, 2018).
Therefore, this qualitative study, with a psychosocial and gender approach, seeked to describe discourses of masculinity and its tensions from University of Cuenca students, with a group of 14 male cisgenders.
The participants showed traditional and alternative discourses. There was an hegemonic discourse with strategies naming genders and legitimizing patriarchy with a version of feminism against them. Also, there were minority discourses about strain, due to emotional restraint, violence and male stereotypes.
